3M has announced its decision to exit the solvent industry by the end of 2025, marking a significant shift in the sector where the company has long been a key player. As part of this transition, 3M will cease production and supply of Novec solutions and other products containing PFAS.

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are a group of synthetic chemicals that have been widely used since the 1950s, thanks to their exceptional stability under extreme conditions. Originally popular in the solvent industry, their applications have expanded to many other fields, including aerospace, defence, automotive manufacturing, food processing, household products, electronics, and construction.

The controversy surrounding PFAS stems from their classification as "Forever Chemicals" due to their strong chemical structure, which makes them resistant to environmental degradation. This resistance allows PFAS to accumulate in the environment, leading to contamination of water, soil, and food over time. There are concerns about potential health risks from PFAS exposure, affecting both people and wildlife.

In response to the environmental and health hazards posed by PFAS, various regulations and restrictions have been introduced to limit their use and mitigate their impact. For instance, in January 2023, a coalition of European countries proposed comprehensive limits on a broad range of PFAS applications. Growing regulatory pressure and a heightened corporate focus on sustainability have played key roles in 3M's decision to exit the PFAS market.

The challenge of replacing PFAS-based cleaning solvents is considerable, as customers demand alternatives that offer equivalent performance while minimising environmental impact and adhering to current and future regulatory standards.

Failing to prepare for the discontinuation of 3M’s Novec products can lead to a range of significant costs and consequences. Businesses that do not transition to alternative solvents in time may face substantial regulatory fines and penalties due to non-compliance with new standards. Operational disruptions, including production downtime and supply chain issues, can result in financial losses and delays. Additionally, the costs associated with emergency procurement increased health and safety risks, and potential environmental remediation can add up quickly. Companies may also suffer from reputational damage and loss of competitive edge, further impacting their bottom line. Proactively addressing these changes is crucial to avoid these costly pitfalls and ensure a smooth transition.

Inventec Performance Chemicals offers a comprehensive range of solvents that can serve as direct replacements for 3M’s Novec products. Customers who have historically relied on a combination of 3M Novec and Topklean EL20A will require a reliable alternative solution post-2025. Inventec’s Promosolv DR1 solvent is an ideal replacement for Novec, particularly when used in combination with Topklean EL20A for co-solvent applications. Other Promosolv Neo solvents are specifically designed to replace high HSE (Health, Safety, and Environmental) impact rinsing solvents, ensuring compliance with the latest and forthcoming regulations.

With 3M’s phase-out imminent, now is the time to act to ensure your business remains unaffected.
